JAKARTA, March 6 (Xinhua) -- At least seventy people
were killed and hundreds of people were internally displaced after a 5.8
magnitude earthquake rocked Indonesia's West Sumatra province on Tuesday, the
provincial Disaster Management Agency reported.
"The death toll has reached to 70," Suri Hamdazir, an
official of the agency told Xinhua on telephone from the province.
Aids from the capital of the province have been
underway to the spots of accidents, he said.
"Tents, logistic and other rescue materials are
delivering to the sites of the location," said Hamdazir.
Another official of the agency named only Suryadi
said that hundreds of people gathered in secure places as their houses have been
flattened by the quake.
He said the death toll is expected to rise.
Indonesian Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said
tens of aftershocks followed the main shock Tuesday morning.
Indonesian is laid on a vulnerable quake-hit zone
that called "the Pacific Rim of Fire," where continental plates meet causing
frequent seismic and volcanic activities.
