BEIJING, March 5 (Xinhua) -- Shanghai General Motors (GM) is hoping to quadruple sales of its Cadillac luxury sedan to 12,000 units in China this year.

"Shanghai GM's sales plan represents the highest growth rate since Cadillac entered China's market," sources with the company said on Sunday.

Last year the company sold 3,000 Cadillacs in China.

Shanghai GM, established in 1997, began making Cadillacs in China in 2004.

"Cadillac sales have developed slowly," sources with the company said, "but it has laid a solid foundation."

Sales of luxury cars by other makers far outstrip those of GM's Cadillac. In 2006, BMW sold 22,550 units, while Audi sold 80,808 units.
