LONDON, March 3 (Xinhua) -- Thanks to an injury-time
goal scored by John O'Shea, Manchester United upset Liverpool 1-0 on Saturday,
enjoying 12 points clear of Chelsea at the top of the premier league.
Champions Chelsea can cut the gap back to nine points
with a game in hand by beating Portsmouth later on Saturday, but the nature of
United's victory will only strengthen their belief that they are destined to
reclaim the title this season.
United, who had been on the back foot for much of the
second half at Anfield, were reduced to ten men when Paul Scholes was sent off
for aiming a punch at Xabi Alonso with four minutes of regulation time left.
But they grabbed an unlikely winner in the second
minute of added-on time after winning a free-kick on the left of the Liverpool
box.
Cristiano Ronaldo sent in a fierce low shot that Liverpool goalkeeper Jose Reina, under pressure from Louis Saha, spilled into the path of O'Shea. The Ireland defender was unchallenged as he thumped the loose ball high into the net from close range.
