BRUSSELS, March 2 (Xinhua) -- Danish police forces across the country were mobilized to face possible new riots in the capital after detaining hundreds of demonstrators on Friday, local media reported.
About a thousand young demonstrators marched through Copenhagen's streets on Thursday, protesting against the forced eviction of squatters from a downtown building which was a popular hang-out for them.
Some activists clashed with police during the eviction, "grabbing stones and throwing molotov cocktails," while the police used tear gas to break up the protest and arrested about 200 demonstrators, local media reported.
Police officers had been patrolling the capital all day Friday, fearing further outbreaks of violence.
Copenhagen police spokesman Flemming Steen said police reinforcements across the country were called in, preparing to "prevent any escalation in violence."
Danish authorities also borrowed 20 police vans from neighboring Sweden to transport police officers to Copenhagen, he added.
Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen condemned Thursday's riots, saying "a few trouble-makers continue to create disorder."
