PARIS, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- France on Friday expressed its support for "intensifying" sanctions against Iran for its refusal to comply with the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1737.

Mohamed El Baradei, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), presented on Thursday a report to the agency's Council of Governors, concluding that Iran had not complied with resolution 1737 calling for the suspension of its uranium enrichment activities, said French Foreign Ministry spokesman Denis Simonneau.

"Resolution 1737 has had some effect and strengthening this resolution could have further effects," Simonneau said, adding that "it will be suitable to intensify the sanctions."

Sanctions could be intensified after seeing if "certain activities which had not been mentioned should have been mentioned" and "if some personalities which were not mentioned should have been mentioned," the spokesman said.

France on Thursday reiterated its concern about the preservation of "firmness" and "unity" among the international community on the Iranian nuclear issue.

The UN Security Council adopted resolution 1737 imposing sanctions on Iran on Dec. 23, 2006, giving the country 60 days to comply with the IAEA demands.

Representatives from the United States, France, Russia, China, Britain and Germany are set to hold a meeting in London on Monday to determine the way forward in the face of Iran's refusal to comply with U.N. demands.
