JAKARTA, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Pascal Lamy met with Indonesian Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu here on Wednesday, asking for Indonesia's political support for resuming the development agenda of the Doha round, a release from the Indonesian Trade Ministry said.
Minister Pangestu said that the visit of the director related with the position of Indonesia as a key country in the WTO meeting.
"As the chairman of the G33 countries, the director general of the WTO asks for political support from the Indonesian government," said Pangestu.
Lamy's visit to Indonesia is part of his series of global visits to get support from key countries for the resuming of the development agenda of the Doha round that has been stalled since July 24 last year, the release said.
The stall was due to disputes among all the WTO member countries in the fields of agriculture and non-agriculture market access, she said.
The WTO director is also schedule to meet with Coordinating Minister for Economy Boediono, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani, Minister of Industry Fahmy Idris, Agriculture Minister Anton Apriantono and others, said the release.
During her meeting with the director, minister Pangestu reaffirmed that the development agenda of the Doha round must bring benefit for developing countries.
The development agenda of the Doha round, first launched on the fourth ministerial meeting in November 2001 in the Qatari capital, aims to remove global trade barriers but has been deadlocked since July last year due to disputes over steps to reduce agricultural tariffs and subsidies.
