TOKYO, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- Japanese media on Monday expressed
dissatisfaction on Japanese players' performance on the Winter Asian Game held
in Changchun city, where Japan finished with 13 golds.
The number of 13 gold medals is a big drop compared with its achievement on
the Aomori Winter Asian Game in 2003.
The media were especially disappointed on the results from ice items. Top
Japanese players got 6 medals on fast track skating, only one third of the
number in the Aomori Game.
"From the world-class criteria, Japan could only get 50 points on the basis
of 100 points," the Mainichi Shimbun quoted an official from the Japanese team
as saying, adding that the prospect for the Japanese team on the 2010 Winter
Olympics in Vancouver is not optimistic.
The newspaper pointed out that the enterprise-based training institution
for players was limited.
Preferring Chinese players' training experience in Canada, some
Japanese sports officials said Japan should learn from China and build up its
own training bases overseas.
