TOKYO, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Former world No. 1 Martina Hingis of Switzerland came closer to a record fifth Pan Pacific Open title, beating defending champion Elena Dementieva of Russia 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals on Saturday.

Current world No. 1 Maria Sharapova of Russia retired with a hamstring injury in her semifinal against Ana Ivanovic of Serbia.

"I had a bad experience against her last year here, so I tried to turn around things," Hingis said. "One year has gone and I'm very happy to be in the final again."
