JILIN, Northeast China, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Olympic silver
medalist Li Nina led a Chinese one-two finish at the freestyle skiing women's
aerials under treacherous weather conditions at the Beidahu ski resort, Jilin
city on Wednesday.
The competition turned out to an all-Chinese battle
as China's top athlete Li Nina scored 194.57 points to rank first and her
17-year-old teammate Xu Mengtao claimed the silver medal with 184.88 points,
Mongolian Maral Unenbat sitting in the third place 61.02 points.
Another Chinese medal hopeful Zhang Xin, 21, ranked
third on the scoreboard but had to share the bronze medal with Maral Unenbat of
Mongolia who finished last in the five-skier field according to the competition
regulation that one team can not sweep all medals in freestyle skiing.
The fourth place finisher was Guo Xinxin of China who
totaled 167.41 points.
The competition started 30 minutes behind the
original schedule due to strong wind and heavy snow. "It is not an easy win
under such bad weather, and my teammates are all excellent in the match. I did
not jump in the best form but I am happy with the result," said 24-year-old Li
after the match.
"Racing at home made me much more nervous as I have
to compete with my teammates, while in Europe we are working in a team."
An inexperienced athlete, the 16-year-old Mongolian
girl Unenbat was in a different league than the Chinese quartet and jumped
almost like an amateur.
"It is a new sport in Mongolia. I just have one boy
and one girl, who has trained only for three months for the sport," said
Bayarzul Chagnaa, head coach of the Mongolia freestyle team.
"We trained in Beidahu during the last two months,
China really gave us great help in coaching and facilities."
