CHANGCHUN, Northeast China, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- China's Wang Beixing was crowned in the women's 500m x2 speed skating while Lee Kang-Seok of South Korea won the men's title, both of whom inking Asian records, at the sixth Asian Winter Games here on Tuesday.

"I gave up the Asian Championships for this tournament," said Wang, a rising star in China. "My target here is to get the gold medal."

Wang finished the first round with an Asian mark of 38.02 seconds, 1.18 off the previous one set by her compatriot Wang Manli, and won by a two-race total of 76.10 seconds.

South Korea's Lee Sang-Hwa, 17, the five-time World Cup winner this season and champion in the Turin Winter Universiade, was beaten to the second in 76.95 seconds, followed by Zhang Shuang of China in 77.59 seconds.

"I am surprised," said Kevin Crockett, Wang's coach from Canada. "I knew she could win, but I didn't expect her to dominate."

The 21-year-old Wang, seventh in the Turin Olympics where Russian Svetlana Zhurova won in 76.57, was among the first group of speedskaters from China to train in Calgary, Canada in 2003.

"I have progressed a lot in the past three years thanks to my coach Kevin," said Wang, who has won one gold and five bronze medals in the 2006-2007 World Cup series.

The men's 500m x2 gold medal was decided between a South Koreanduo. Lee Kang-Seok, winner in the World Cup in Nagano last December, outdid Lee Kyou-Hyuk with a total of 70.30 seconds after setting the other Asian record of 35.11 seconds in the first race.

"I didn't expect to win a gold here," said Lee Kang-Seok, 22. "I am not very experienced yet, and my goal is the Winter Olympics in Vancouver in 2010."

Lee Kyou-Hyuk took the silver medal in 70.50 seconds ahead of Yuya Oikawa, fourth in the Turin Olympics, in 70.88 seconds.
