The Republic of Seychelles

    An archipelago country in the western part of Indian Ocean, the Republic of Seychelles is composed of 115 islands with a combined land area of 455 square km and a territorial water area of some 400,000 square km. It has a population of 85,000, mostly Bantu, Creole, and descendants of Indians, Pakistanis, Chinese and French settlers. Most of the local residents believe in Christianity Protestantism, Roman Catholicism, Islam, and Hinduism. Creole is the official language, and English and French are extensively used. The national capital is Victoria. The current president is James Alex Michel.

    Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Seychelles on June 30, 1976, bilateral relations have been developing smoothly and steadily. The President of the National Assembly Macgregor visited China in 2004. Ismail Amat, vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, visited Seychelles in 2006. Seychelles is one of China's outbound travel destinations. Bilateral trade has been growing rapidly, with trade volume totaling 3.41 million U.S. dollars in 2005.
