The Republic of Liberia
Situated in the western part of the African continent, the Republic of Liberia covers an area of 111,400 square km and has a population of 3,480,000 belonging to 22 ethnic groups. Most of the Liberian residents believe in Christian and Islam. English is the official language. Monrovia is the national capital. The current president is Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, who is Africa's first female president.
Since China and Liberia restored diplomatic relations on Oct. 11, 2003, bilateral ties have been developing rapidly and great progress has been made in bilateral cooperation in various areas. The Liberian Parliament passed a resolution on adhering to the"One-China policy" in 2005. Liberian Foreign Minister visited China in 2004. Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing visited Liberia in 2006. Bilateral trade reached 164 million U.S. dollars in 2005.
