The oceanographic survey ship USNS Mary Sears has detected pingers on the same frequency of the black boxes associated with the missing airplane using a Towed Pinger Locator, the US embassy said in a statement emailed to Xinhua.

"In subsequent sweeping of the ocean floor around the pinger location, the Mary Sears detected heavy debris scattered over a wide area and is currently analyzing that debris to verify if it is from the missing aircraft," it said.

The missing Boeing 737-400 flight number 574 belongs to the Jakarta-based Adam Air.

Three U.S. citizens were among the passengers.

Having completed its mission of locating the black boxes and informing the Indonesian government of their location, the Mary Sears is scheduled to depart Indonesian waters Friday, it said.
