RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Brazilian Census Bureauon Thursday published a new map showing where and how humans are encroaching on the Amazon rainforest.

The map is a satellite image, based on 2003 data, that includes data on human activities such as deforestation, mining, cattle ranching and crop expansion.

The map is expected to help the authorities monitor human activities in the region and thus better protect the forest.

The Amazon region, the world's largest rainforest, is home to about a quarter of all living species on Earth.
