HAVANA, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- The 2007 International Conference of Oxidative Stress kicked off on Thursday in Havana.
About 200 specialists from some 20 countries across the world are expected to discuss oxidative stress-related diseases, methods of diagnosis, antioxidants, nutritional and pharmacological interventions.
According to the Cuban News Agency, Cuba's accomplishments in the creation of natural antioxidant products will be presented at the meeting that will end on Saturday.
Cuban experts will introduce innovative methods of diagnosis and the production of antioxidants such as the VIMANG, a product obtained from the bark of the mango tree, which has proven effective in treatment of diabetes and bronchial asthma.
VIMANG has positive effects on the immune system, prevents and repairs damage associated to oxidative stress, and destroys free radicals in the body with greater effectiveness, says Cuban News Agency.
Oxidative Stress is a general term used to describe the steady state level of oxidative damage in a cell, tissue or organ, caused by the reactive oxygen species.
An abnormally high level of oxidative stress can increase people's probability of early incidence of decline in optimum body functions.
