CHANGCHUN, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- Turin Olympics multi-champions Ann Hyun Soo and
Jin Sun Yu will help the South Koreans dominate the short track speed skating
rink in Changchun Asian Winter Games while China will hope their
sensation Wang Meng to steal some limelight from their Asian neighbor.
"The short track speed skating rink is gonna be the battle field for the
Chinese and South Koreans," said Chinese head coch Li Yan, who came back to
China last year on a four-year contract.
"South Korea has made great progress these years and the competition is
going to be tough for the Chinese skaters," she said. She coached American Apolo
Anton Ohno to the men's 500m short track speed skating gold in Turin Olympics in
2006.
In Salt Lake City Olympics, China and South Korea each took home two golds but
in Turin, South Korea clinched six out of eight golds on offer while China
just had one through Wang Meng in the women' 500m.
Ann and Jin, spearheading the 168-member South Korean delegation for the winter
Asiad in Changchun kicking off on Sunday, each had three titles to their
name.
Ann, 21, excelled in men's 1,000m and 1,500m and led the relay team to the
5,000m relay gold in Turin while 18-year-old Jin also made the Olympic short
track speed skating rink her own backyard by winning women's 1,000m, 1,500m and
3,000m relay.
With Turin 1,500m bronze medalist Li Jiajun hung up his skates after the
Olympics, Chinese men skaters are not strong enough to threaten. Li Ye, two-time
bronze medalist in World Cups, may pursue a podium finish.
But there are still chances for Chinese skaters and women's 500m is seen as
the "must-win" event by them.
Olympic champion Wang Meng not only triumphed in her favorite 500m in
Turin, but enjoyed victories in three World Cups this season. And the
21-year-old may have a chance in 1,000m after taking two World Cups this year.
"In addition to the 500m, we would like to challenge the South Koreans in
the 3,000m relay," said team leader Wang Chunlu, who was a member of the winning
team in this event at 1998, 1999 and 2000 world championships.
"South Korea is the hot favorite in the 3,000m relay but we will give it a
shot," she added. China won the event in three World Cups this year.
The 6th Asian Winter Games is slated on Jan. 28 through Feb. 4 in
the northeast city of Changchun in China.
