RIO
DE JANEIRO, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- Legendary football player Romario on Friday was
let down by FIFA in his intention to play for team Vasco da Gama up until June
2007.
Since mid-2006, Romario has played for two other
teams: USA's Miami Football Club and Australia's Adelaide United. As FIFA states
that a player can only participate in official matches for a maximum of two
clubs per year, the striker was not allowed to be in the team for Rio de
Janeiros State Championship.
Vascos law office tried to argue that Miami F.C., for
which Romario played from May to Oct. 2006, is a member of a league in the USA
that is not endorsed by FIFA, which could not be accounted as an official
participation. However, the entity sent back to the Brazilian club a letter
stating that the league was legitimate.
According to the teams attorneys, FIFA has not
prevented Romario from playing yet. They will have another meeting with FIFA
officials in order to state further reasons and try to get an authorization.
The striker, who led the national team in their quest
for Brazils fourth World Cup title, in 1994, is looking forward to achieving a
feat attributed only to Pele in the History of football: scoring his 1,000th
goal in official matches. According to Romario, there are only 13 goals to score
to reach the mark.
Vasco was preparing a major party to celebrate the
achievement. Romario is already practicing at club for the upcoming tournaments.
But, if FIFA does not back away from its decision, hewill only be allowed to
play friendly games in the first half of 2007, putting off the party to, maybe,
the end of the year.
