MELBOURNE,
Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Top seed Maria Sharapova of Russia won through to the third
round of the Australian Open tennis championship here on Thursday.
The world No. two sailed past compatriot Anastassia
Rodionova in straight sets 6-0 and 6-3.
The match was a sharp contrast to her first round
clash where she went within two points of crashing out after struggling for
almost three hours in baking heat.
Sharapova now faces Italian Tathiana Garbin, who
defeated Czech Renata Voracova 6-1 and 7-5 to reach the third round.

MELBOURNE, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Many a seeded players
advanced into the third round of the Australian Open's men's singles here on
Thursday, including second seed Rafael Nadal of Spain, third seed Nikolay
Davydenko of Russia, fifth seed James Blake, eighth seed David Nalbandian and
former world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt.
Nadal had a marathon four-set victory over German Philipp
Kohlschreiber.
In a match that started Thursday night and spilled over
into the early hours of Friday, Nadal downed the unseeded opponent 7-5,6-3, 4-6
and 6-2 and will next play Swiss 31st seed Stanislas Wawrinka.
Hingis, Clijsters advance to 3rd round
of Australian Open
MELBOURNE, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Three-time champion
Martina Hingis advanced to the third round of Australian Open with a 6-2 6-2
victory over Russian Alla Kudryavtseva here on Thursday.
Hingis, the 1997, 1998 and 1999 Australian Open
champion, who made the quarterfinals in Melbourne last year in her comeback
Grand Slam, eased through her second round match in an hour and eight minutes
early on Day Four.
Hingis will play either Sania Mirza or Aiko Nakamura for
a spot in the fourth round.
Chinese Li joins title contenders to
reach 3rd round
MELBOURNE, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Li Na
joined title contenders Kim Clijsters and Martina Hingis to cruise into the
third round of Australian Open here on Thursday.
The 25-year-old took 65 minutes to breeze past
Spaniard L. Dominguez Lino 6-0, 6-2 after both Clijsters and Hingis completed
their comfortable wins.
"I think I played quite well today, " said the
Wimbledon quarter-finalist.
