JAKARTA, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia has rejected a proposed United Nations Security Council resolution calling the situation in Myanmar as risks to international security and peace. It maintained the stance that the issue should be handled by the UN Human Rights Council.

"The draft resolution that highlights problems of democratization, human rights violations and refugees (in Myanmar)is better brought to the UN Human Rights Council, instead of the Security Council," Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda told reporters here Wednesday.

Wirajuda said Indonesia, the current non-permanent member of the Security Council, chose to abstain in the voting over Myanmar issue.

Indonesia basically supports changes in Myanmar but they should be achieved in appropriate ways because the Southeast Asian country is not a threat for the global peace, he said without elaborating.

Indonesia would not intervene in the domestic affairs of Myanmar, but as a fellow member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Indonesia is committed to helping Myanmar resolve their problems, he said.

Indonesia involves in the three-nation committee tasked with supporting Myanmar's democratization process along with Singapore and the Philippines.
