MELBOURNE, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- World No. 2 of Spain Rafael Nadal and the eighth seed David Nalbandian are the highest-profile players who have so far went into the second round of the Australian Open men's singles in Melbourne Tuesday.
Nadal grabbed the first set 7-6 against American Robert Kendrick amid the later's strong resistance before winning the match 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 6-2.
The match was held under the roof at the main court Rod Laver Arena after the Open's extreme heat policy was activated due to temperatures in the 40s.
Matches at outside courts were halted by organizers under the policy.
While Nalbandian lost the opening two sets of his first-round clash with Serb Janko Tipsarevic before he fought back to level it at two sets all and was leading 2-1 when an exhausted Tipsarevic was forced to withdraw amid high temperature.
The 13th seed Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic defeated Hyung-Taik Lee of Korea 6-1 6-2 6-2.
The 31th seed Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland beat Kevin Kim of the United States 6-1 2-6 6-4 6-2.
