WARSAW, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- The European Union (EU) will try to solve Polish-Russian meat trade dispute at a meeting with Russia scheduled for Jan. 17 in Berlin, EU Health Commissioner Markos Kyprianou said on Monday.

    During the meeting between the EU and the two countries, the EUwill assure Russia that Poland meets the requirements of the European legislature as well as those of the bilateral trade agreement with Russia, Kyprianou told reporters after meeting with Polish Deputy PM and Agriculture Minister Andrzej Lepper.

    Russia imposed a ban on Polish meat products in November 2005, citing fraudulent veterinary certificates issued by Poland.

    Last November, Poland vetoed the launch of talks between the EU and Russia on a broad economic cooperation agreement because of the Russian ban.

    According to Kyprianou, shortcomings concerning meat transit in Poland did not justify a complete ban on meat trade.

    Kyprianou said resolving the dispute is one of EU's top priorities. However, no one should expect an immediate breakthrough. It will take some time, he said.

    Lepper said Poland is thankful for EU's participation in solving the meat trade dispute with Russia.

    "Poland has met all requirements set by Russia ... We want Russia to present the EU with all charges against Poland," Lepper was quoted by the PAP news agency as saying.
