Old woman murdered in Shanghai for being too picky

BEIJING, Jan. 15 -- A Shanghai woman killed an elderly woman who was living in her home because she was "too picky about the food she was served and was very bad-tempered."

The woman, surnamed Huang, surrendered herself and admitted to killing the woman to police in Chongming County on the same day she committed the crime last May, Youth Daily reported today.

The Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate People's Court has begun a court hearing over the case.

The victim, surnamed Shi, was hit by Huang's daughter's bicycle last January and had a fractured left thighbone.

The hospital where she was treated estimated a surgery fee of around 30,000 yuan (3,851 U.S.dollars), which troubled Huang's family as they almost had no savings, the court was told.

Huang and Shi's families later reached an agreement that Shi would stay at Huang's home for a three-month-long conservative treatment period that would cost the Huang's about 10,000 yuan, the report said.

Huang also promised that she would take good care of Shi and treat her like a member of her family until she fully recovered, according to the report.

"However, three months later, the doctors said it would take at least another six months for a full recovery," Huang said. "I felt despair, as all our efforts and patience were in vain.

"She never ate vegetables, only meat and fish," Huang told the court. "Furthermore, she would easily become infuriated when she discovered that dinner's menu was the same as lunch."

"I borrowed a great sum of money to support Shi's living and treatment fee," Huang told the court. "I couldn't bear it any more."
