BEIJING, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- There is a huge digital divide between rich
and poor people in China, and the gap is widening as communication technologies
advance, according to a national report.
This has a big impact on young people, said the report on China's youth
development published by the China Youth and Children Research Center (CYCRC).
"Most Chinese Internet users are urbanites, and the number of cell phones
and landlines in eastern China is much greater than in the western part of the
country," the report pointed out.
The digital divide has a big impact on young people and on the
opportunities available to them, said Yang Shoujian, assistant researcher with
the CYCRC.
About 29 percent of Beijing and 27 percent of Shanghai residents are
Internet users, while only 2.8, 3.3 and 4.1 percent of dwellers in southwest
China's Guizhou, the autonomous region of Tibet and the central province of
Henan use the Internet, said the report.
