President Hu discusses Mid-East tesions with visiting Israeli PM

    BEIJING, Jan. 12 -- China's President Hu Jintao who's met in Beijing with Israel's Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. The leaders discussed a variety of issues, agreeing to deepen diplomatic ties. Topping their agenda was the Middle East. Hu told Olmert that China would continue to promote peace in the region.

    Olmert's visit coincides with the fifteenth anniversary of China-Israel diplomatic ties. President Hu Jintao noted that the two countries have made profound achievements in their cooperation in trade, technology, agriculture, and education.

    President Hu also says restoring peace in the Middle East is the common wish of the local people and the global community. He also hopes all concerned parties work for peaceful coexistence through dialogue and negotiation. And President Hu pledges China will play a constructive role in solving the problem.

    For his part, Olmert says he appreciates China's stance on the Middle East issue. He also hopes China will continue its efforts in working out a solution.

    Earlier on Thursday, Olmert took a break from political meetings. He visited the Forbidden City. As a son of a former Jewish resident in China, Olmert says he has a spiritual tie with the country.

    On the same day, China's Foreign Ministry said that China supports the mutual development of the Israelis and the Palestinians.

    Liu Jianchao, Foreign Ministry spokesman, said, "During Wednesday's talks with Olmert, Premier Wen Jiabao said he hopes Israel can hold dialogue and negotiations with Syria, Lebanon, and the Palestinians to eventually restore regional peace and stability. Olmert also expressed willingness to achieve peaceful coexistence with neighboring countries through talks."

    Olmert began his state visit on Tuesday. During his visit, he also took time to help launch the China-Israel Cooperation Center for Dairy Technology.
