MANILA, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo
arrived in Cebu city Friday for the 12th ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian
Nations) Summit, local media reported.
The President, accompanied by First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo and
daughter Lourdes Arroyo, arrived at the Mactan International Airport shortly
before 11 a.m., said a report by GMATV.
Arroyo said that with the hosting of the ASEAN and East Asian summits, the
Philippines has captured a "moment of glory as the hub and gateway of
partnership and cooperation in ASEAN and the whole East Asian region."
"Let this meeting be another opportunity for the world to witness the best
of a sharing and caring community carving out a united response in addressing
problems of poverty, terrorism, environmental degradation, trade and energy -
marking a vibrant market and a new phase of trade and development across
borders," Arroyo said in a statement.
She said the twin summits would foster cooperation and partnership among the participating nations towards the development of the region.
