WASHINGTON, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President George W. Bush said on Wednesday that the al Qaida terrorist group's home base in Iraq is in the western Anbar Province.

    "Al Qaida is still active in Iraq," Bush asserted in his prime-time nationally-televised address announcing his new Iraq strategy.

    The terrorist organization's "home base (in Iraq) is Anbar province," he said.

    The terror group "has helped make Anbar the most violent area of Iraq outside the capital," Bush noted.

    A captured al Qaida document described the terrorists' plan to infiltrate and seize control of the province, he said.

    Local tribal leaders had recently begun to show their willingness to take on al Qaida, and U.S. commanders believed they had an opportunity to deal a serious blow to the terrorists, he said.

    "So I have given orders to increase American forces in Anbar province by 4,000 troops," he added.
