Beijing to improve sex education in primary, middle schools

BEIJING, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Beijing educational authorities are drafting sex education guidelines for primary and middle schools to cope with increasing sexual behavior among teenagers, Thursday's Beijing Morning Post said.

The guidelines will help fill the vacuum of sex education for young people, which used to be a taboo in Chinese society.

The educational authorities have authorized the Beijing Sex Health Education Research Center to conduct a survey on sex education among Beijing primary and middle schools.

"The sex education guidelines will be issued based on the survey results," said Zhang Meimei, vice president of the research center.

Sex education will start with higher grades of primary schools, and cover physiological, psychological and legal aspects, according to the newspaper.

Chinese youth have become increasingly open toward sex.

In a recent survey, 6.2 percent of the 2,000 students interviewed admitted they had had their first sexual experience before the age of 16. Over half the interviewees said a one-night stand was "understandable".
