BEIJING, Jan. 10 -- Two Chinese love stories, both directed by Taiwan filmmaker
Jingle Ma, will compete for audiences in Chinese cinemas soon.
Starring Shawn Yue from Hong Kong and Gao Yuanyuan
from the Chinese mainland, "Love in the City" opened in cinemas Tuesday. The
other, named "Happy Birthday," based on Taiwan actress Rene Lau's novel, will
premiere in Beijing next week.
When asked about the two films' close release dates,
the director said he wasn't worried. "The two films show two different attitudes
towards relationships. 'Love in the City' is about adolescent love, while the
other focuses on an adult perspective of a relationship," he said.
He also said "Happy Birthday" was greatly influenced
by screenwriter Sylvia Chang, signaling that a female perspective had been
infused into the movie.
In "Happy Birthday" Taiwan actress Rene Lau and Hong
Kong actor Louis Koo play a couple who, although in love with each other, fail
to be together at last.
White-collar workers are the film's target audience.
