Special report: Indonesian passenger plane missing
JAKARTA, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- An Indonesian warship equipped with sonar Monday detected "a metallic object" in the waters of West Sulawesi province but was unable to confirm if it was the wreckage of the missing passenger plane being sought in the last eight days.
The object was located 1,500 meters below the sea level and the navy has no supporting equipment to take a closer look.
First Marshal Gatot Sudijanto, a Navy commander in South Sulawesi province, said the object was detected by the Fatahillah Warship at the Makassar Strait, some 1,500 km southeast of Jakarta.
The navy is awaiting support from a US Navy ship to help identify the object, he was quoted by leading news website Detikcom as saying.
