CANBERRA, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- Switzerland's top seed
Martina Hingis did not sweat to reach the quarter-finals as Chinese ace Li Na
was upset by Colombia's Catalina Castano at the Australian Gold Coast Open on
Tuesday.
Hingis did not seem to be
firing on all cylinders to get through Nicole Pratt 6-0, 6-1 while the Chinese
women's number one lost at 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.
Hingis, ranked seventh in the world currently, gave
the Australian little hope, dominating with her superior movement and speed at
the back of the court to book a place in the last eight against Castano.
Castano moved into the last eight at the expense of
sixth seed Li Na.
Hingis completely outclassed Pratt in the opener
before the Australian broke the Swiss player's serve in the first game of the
second to give the home crowd some hope.
But the Swiss, who made her full-time tour comeback
after a three-year absence in the 2006 event, hit another gear to shatter the
world number 77 in less than an hour.
Seventh-seeded Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia also
went out, losing 6-3, 6-2 to Russian Elena Vesnina.
