    White Paper: China active in UN peacekeeping missions


    BEIJING, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- China has actively participated in UN peacekeeping operations and international disaster relief operations, says a white paper issued here Friday by the Information Office of the State Council.

    Titled "China's National Defense in 2006", the white paper says that since 1990, China has sent 5,915 military personnel to participate in 16 UN peacekeeping operations. Eight lost their lives and several dozens were wounded on duty.  Full story <<<     

    White Paper: China reduces 200,000 troops between 2003-2005


    BEIJING, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- China said here Friday that it has reduced 200,000 troops between 2003 and 2005.

    The People's Liberation Army (PLA) currently has 2.3 million troops, says a White Paper on China's National Defense in 2006 issued by the Information Office of the State Council.

    In 1985, 1997 and 2003, China announced that it would downsize the PLA by one million, 500,000 and 200,000 troops, respectively.  Full story <<<

    
    White Paper: China endeavors to make border, coastal defense informationized

    BEIJING, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- China is endeavoring to make its border and coastal defense unified, effective, solid and informationized, says a white paper on China's National Defense in2006 issued by the Information Office of the State Council, here Friday.

    The White Paper introduces that the People's Liberation Army (PLA) is the main force for defending China's borders and coasts. In 2003, the PLA border defense force took over the defense of the China-DPRK border and the Yunnan section of the China-Myanmar border from the border public security force, thus enabling the state to integrate land border defense and administration.  Full story <<<
