CARACAS, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said on Thursday that his government will not renew the license of Radio Caracas Television, one of the country's oldest and most anti-Chavez stations, saying that the station had supported a coup.

"RCTV -- pack your bags," Chavez said at a public end-year ceremony for the armed forces, held in Tiuna Fort in the country's capital Caracas.

"There will be no concession for coup-supporting television channels. We will not tolerate media that are against the people," he said.

Chavez said that RCTV had actively supported the plotters of the attempted coup on April 11 and 12, 2002, which deprived Chavez of power for 48 hours.

During the speech, Chavez also called on the Venezuelan armed forces to help him in his new mandate which begins in January.

RCTV, founded in 1953, is openly opposed to Chavez, and its news analysis programs relentlessly criticized Venezuela's head of state. The station's current license runs out in March.
