    Palestinian militants slam Abbas-Olmert deal to free prisoners

    GAZA, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) -- A deal between Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israel to release a number of Palestinian prisoners was far away from a proposed swap to exchange a captured Israeli soldier, a spokesman for Palestinian militants said on Monday.

    Abu Mujahed, spokesman for the Popular Resistance Committees (PRC), said that the Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit would not be released "before the Palestinian prisoners enjoy freedom." Full story>>

    Israel mulls removing 59 checkpoints in W Bank

    JERUSALEM, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) -- Israeli Defense Minister Amir Peretz said on Monday that he intended to remove 59 out of 400 checkpoints in the West Bank, the Yedioth Ahronoth daily reported.

    Speaking at the Defense and Foreign Affairs Committee of the Knesset (parliament), Peretz said that the removal would take a long time, because the army needs to check each roadblock before dismantling them. Full story>>

    JERUSALEM, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert Sunday said at the weekly cabinet meeting that Israel may release some Palestinian prisoners next week, Israeli daily Ha'aretz report on its website.

    According to Ha'aretz, Olmert at the meeting consulted cabinet ministers about their position on a new Palestinian request for the release of Palestinian prisoners by next week. Full story>>
