Pentagon report: Iraq violence reaches
record levels
WASHINGTON, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- Violence in Iraq reached
the highest levels on record this autumn, fueled by sectarian strife that is
propelling the nation toward civil war, the Pentagon said in a report released
here Monday.
Between mid-August and mid-November, attack levels in
Iraq reached record highs in all categories as the number of U.S.-led coalition
casualties surged 32 percent and the number of weekly attacks rose 22 percent
nationwide, compared with those of the previous three months, according to the
report.

Bush likely to support "surge" of additional U.S. troops to Iraq
WASHINGTON, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President George
W. Bush is likely to support a plan for a "surge" of additional American troops
to Iraq, ABC News reported Saturday.
The surge could involve more than 30,000 additional
troops and last as long as two years, sources were quoted as saying. That could
bring the total number of U.S. troops in Iraq to at least 164,000, the highest
total since the war started in March 2003.
