GAZA, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- A bodyguard for Palestinian
Prime Minister Ismail Haneya was killed and his eldest son wounded on Thursday
night as unknown militants opened fire at his convoy at Rafah border crossing,
Palestinian official and witnesses said.
Witnesses at the crossing said that militants
guarding the convoy of Haneya opened fire at presidential guard loyal to
President Mahmoud Abbas which control security at the terminal.
They added that the presidential guards responded to
the sources of fire, where one of Haneya's bodyguards was killed and five others
were wounded, including Haneya's son.
Haneya said following the attack that "we know very
well who opened fire at our convoy, which caused some casualties, and we know
very well how to react to it".
Palestinian Foreign Minister Mahmoud Al-Zahar told
reporters that several Hamas and government officials went into the crossing to
lobby for receiving the prime minister, adding that "no one of us carried any
arms."
"On our way out, suddenly, unknown militants fired at
the convoy", killing a bodyguard and wounded five others, including the eldest
son of the premier Abul Sallam Haneya, said Zahar.
He called on Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to
start immediate investigation into the incident "to know who the people are and
why they opened fire at the prime minister's convoys."
