Indian PM leaves for Japan on strategic cooperation

    NEW DELHI, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh left for Japan on Wednesday as part of India's increasing eastern orientation of foreign policy.

    Singh will discuss with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to reinforce the strategic focus in the partnership and move to a more comprehensive economic engagement, the Prime Minister said ina statement before the departure.

    The two will also talk about mutually beneficial cooperation in the entire range of the relationship, including security and terrorism, energy, transport, science and technology and culture.

    Singh will pay an official visit to Japan from Dec. 14 to 16 at the invitation of Abe.

    "I see this journey as part of the increasing eastern orientation of India's foreign policy and our quest for greater engagement with countries in the larger East Asian region," he said.

    Japan is the fourth largest investor in India with a total direct investment of more than 1.8 billion U.S dollars from 2005 to 2007.
