DOHA, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- Qatar National Olympic Committee (QNOC) and Q-Tel company combined to award a quarter of a million Qatar riyals (70,000 US dollars) to each of their gold medallists at the Doha Asian Games on Tuesday.
The 250,000 riyals consists of two portions with 150,000 coming from the QNOC and 100,000 from Q-Tel.
Q-Tel also rendered 50,000 and 30,000 riyals for the silver and bronze medallists respectively. QNOC poured in an unspecific premium to the silver and bronze winners, but it was expected to be a larger sum than Q-Tel's.
"Q-Tel is sponsoring the Qatari medal winners and they are giving 100,000 QR to gold medallists, 50,000 QR for silver and 30,000 QR for bronze. This is in addition to the money awarded by the Qatar NOC. So there will be about a quarter of a million for the gold medal winner," said QNOC secretary-general H.E. Sheikh Saoud Bin Abdul-Rahman Al-Thani before awarding the prizes.
Q-Tel CEO Sheikh Abdulla Al-Thani expressed the willingness of continuous sponsorship to Qatari sports.
"We established a tradition of assisting the development on Qatari sports. We gave a lot of sponsorships to the team events in Qatar, and we will put in our assistance to the individual events in the future alongside the team events, especially for international competitions," said Sheikh Abulla Al-Thani.
Q-Tel's prizes for a member of team events are categorized by 30,000 QR for gold, 15,000 QR for silver and 10,000 QR for bronze.
