MEXICO CITY, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- Four people died,
more than 20 injured and 100 prisoners escaped Friday in a jail riot in Cancun,
in the eastern Mexican state of Quintana Roo.
Jail director Juvenal Reyes told the media that the
rebellion began at 7 a.m. local time (1300 GMT) when guards tried to transfer
the most dangerous prisoners from Cancun to another jail in Chetumal, also in
Quintana Roo.
Angry prisoners attacked the guards with bats and
knives, Reyes said.
Some 50 of the escaped prisoners have been recaptured
and jail order was restored hours after the jailbreak.
The jail was designed for housing 500 prisoners, but it held some 1,000 when the riot broke out.
