LIMA, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- At least 50 people were killed and two others injured in a remote part of southern Peru on Tuesday when a passenger bus drove off a cliff, local police said.
The accident occurred at dawn when the coach was speeding near the town of Macusani, in the tourist area of Puno, a police statement said, adding that the cliff was 500 meters tall.
A 48-year-old man and a six-year-old boy, who were in serious condition, were the only survivors of the accident.
The accident followed a program launched by the government to stem the high number of crashes on the country's roads. More than 40 people were killed in road accidents in October.
