DOHA, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese veterans Tan Zongliang and TaoLuna both defended their titles while Kuwait's debutant Naser Meqlad shot down two golds at the Lusail Shooting Complex at the Asian Games here on Sunday.
Tao, 32, winner of the women's 10m air pistol at the Sydney Olympic Games, scored a total of 99.3 points in the 10-shot final round after setting a new Asian record of 391 points in the qualification.
Her total score was also a new Asiad mark while the previous record of 487.2 points was produced by herself in the Busan Games four year ago.
"I have been off the podium for long time," said Tao. "So this gold medal is much heavier than the one I won in Busan.
"The 391 is the highest score I have ever achieved in my career."
Earlier on Sunday, Tao, together with Guo Wenjun and Chen Ying, a 25m pistol specialist, equalled the team world record of 1,161 points set by Russia in 1993 en route to the title.
Her compatriot Guo, 22, won the individual silver medal with a total of 487.0 points in her international debut.
Wang Yifu, head coach of the Chinese rifle and pistol team, praised both the veteran and the youngster.
"It is very hard for Tao to come back to her form," he said. "Today, I saw a 100 percent Tao."
"As for Guo, her performance today proved that she is not a shooter who can only do well in domestic competitions," said Wang.
In the men's air pistol, 35-year-old Tan also repeated his feat after clinching the team title with Lin Zhongzai and Pang Wei. The multiple World Cup winner secured the gold medal with a total score of 687.1 points despite of a second lowest final round score of 99.1 points.
"I tried something new in my last final shot after having almost secured the first place," said Tan, triple gold medallist in Busan. "However, I overdid the action which caused an mark of 8.7."
In the shotgun fields, Kuwait's Asian Games debutant trap shooter Naser Meqlad shook off the shifting winds to win his first major international title and a team gold for the west Asian country.
The 24-year-old Meqlad led the qualification round with 114 out of a possible 125 hits and clinched 19 in the 25-target final round, beating India's world champion Manavjit Singh Sandhu to the second position on a total of 130 hits.
"It is too windy and it does affect me a bit, but everyone is competing under this condition," said Meqlad, uplifted by his teammates after the win. "I really need to say thank you to my Kuwait people, especially my coach and family too."
By contrast, Sandhu, the title favorite, complained about the wind much.
"I had a problem with my contact lens in my left eye," said Sandhu. "The wind was too strong today and my lens was moving a lot.
"This is ridiculous. It is too windy. I have never had a problem with my contact lens."
The team title of the men's 50m rifle prone went to Kazakhstan, led by veteran Sergey Belyayev with a total score of 1,762 points.
