MANILA, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- Super typhoon "Durian" has weakened after
crossing the northern coast of Mindoro in central Philippines on its way to the
South China Sea, the local weather bureau PAGASA reported Friday.
In a severe bulletin, PAGASA said "Durian" was spotted 230 kilometers west of
Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro, or 235 km southwest of Metro Manila. It was packing
maximum sustained winds of 130 km per hour near the center and gustiness of
up to 160 kph. It was moving west at 15 kph.
"Durian" ravaged Albay and its neighboring provinces in central Philippines
Thursday, killing at least 146 people in mudslides it caused in eight villages
near the Mount Mayon volcano, according to Philippine officials.
The PAGASA forecasts said Durian will be 540 km west southwest of Metro Manila,
or over the South China Sea by Saturday afternoon. It is expected to be
800 km west southwest of Metro Manila by Sunday afternoon.
Public storm warning signal number 2 was still up over Occidental Mindoro
and Lubang Island 200 kilometers southwest of Manila, while signal number 1 was
raised over Laguna, Bataan, Metro Manila, Cavite, Batangas, Oriental Mindoro and
Calamian Group of Islands.
Residents living in low lying and mountainous areas under public storm warning signals were alerted against flashfloods and landslides, while those living in coastal areas under signal 2 were advised to seek higher grounds due to possible storm surge.
