Special report: Tension escalates in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- Iraqi and U.S. forces raided overnight a Shiite mosque in southern Baghdad and found a large amount of security forces' uniforms and equipment and a cache of weapons, an Interior Ministry source told Xinhua Tuesday.

"A joint U.S. and Iraqi police forces raided the mosque of Imamal-Hassan Husseiniyah in Doura district and found a large amount of Iraqi police and army uniforms and equipment along with a large cache of weapons and explosives," the source said on condition of anonymity.

The U.S. and Iraqi troops clashed with the militiamen guarding the building before they entered the mosque, wounding four militiamen and detaining 14 others, the source added.

U.S. troops frequently attacked neighborhoods controlled by Shiite militia, some of which were accused by Sunni Arabs of running death squads using uniforms and equipment of the Shiite-dominated police and army.
