RAMALLAH, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said on Monday that the Palestinians want a comprehensive ceasefire agreement with Israel which includes West Bank as well as Gaza Strip.
"We were hoping to reach general calmness comprising Gaza and West Bank," Erekat told Voice of Palestine radio, adding that some measures should be taken on the ground before achieving ceasefire in West Bank.
Erekat's remarks came a day after a ceasefire came into effect in Gaza Strip.
After weeks of offensive in Gaza Strip, Israel accepted a ceasefire on Sunday in Gaza Strip where it had withdrew troops overnight Sunday, after Palestinian militant groups agreed to stop launching rockets from the strip at Israel starting from 6:00 a.m. Sunday.
Though several rocket barrages hit southern Israel hours after the ceasefire went into effect, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Sunday said that Israel would display "patience and restraint." However, Israeli troops killed two Palestinians in West Bank on Monday morning, which enraged militants in Gaza who observe the truce.
After the incident, Israeli radio quoted army sources as saying that the ceasefire agreement reached with the Palestinians did not include the West Bank.
According to Erekat, Israel has to withdraw forces from West Bank and stop detention campaigns there in order to discuss possibilities of drawing a comprehensive ceasefire deal.
Meanwhile, Khaled al-Batsh, a senior Islamic Jihad leader in Gaza, said his movement "has been monitoring to what extent the Israeli commitment of the truce was," adding "the Islamic Jihad will not allow the enemy to appropriate West Bank."
The Palestinian factions are to hold a meeting tonight to evaluate the ceasefire following the West Bank incident, according to Erekat.
