EU condemns assassination of Lebanese minister

    HELSINKI, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- The European Union's current presidency Finland condemned Tuesday in the strongest terms the brutal assassination of Lebanese Industry Minister Pierre Gemayel.

    An EU statement said that the attack came at a time when political situation in Lebanon is already critically tense. The Presidency thus urged all parties to refrain from activities that would further endanger the political stability of Lebanon.

Russia condemns assassination of Lebanese minister

    MOSCOW, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Russian condemned the assassination of Lebanese Industry Minister Pierre Gemayel on Tuesday and expected the perpetrators of the slaying to be brought to justice.

    "We resolutely denounce the crime and extend our sincere condolences to (Gemayel's) family and relatives," Foreign Ministry spokesman Mikhail Kamynin was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying. 

AL chief denounces assassination of Lebanese minister

    CAIRO, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Arab League (AL) Secretary General Amr Moussa Tuesday strongly condemned the assassination of Lebanese Industry Minister Pierre Gemayel, Egypt's official news agency MENA reported.

    Terming the assassination as a "terrorist attack," Moussa warned the danger of sedition among the Lebanese in the wake of the incident.

Britain condemns assassination of Lebanese minister

    LONDON, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- British Prime Minister Tony Blair condemned the assassination of Lebanese Industry Minister Pierre Gemayel on Tuesday, saying the death of Gemayel underlined the "absolute and urgent" need for a strategy that supports democracy in the Middle East.

    At the joint news conference after talks with his visiting Greek counterpart Costas Karamanilis, Blair "utterly" condemned the murder, saying the international community needed to do all it could to protect democracy in Lebanon. 

Chirac condemns "odious killing" of Lebanese minister

    PARIS, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- French President Jacques Chirac condemned on Tuesday the "odious attack" of Lebanese Industry Minister Pierre Cemayel, saying "the assassins should be prosecuted and punished."

    Chirac "condemns this odious attacks with the greatest resolution and calls for the assassins to be prosecuted and punished," according to a statement.

U.S. condemns murder of Lebanese minister 

    WASHINGTON, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- The United States condemned the assassination of Lebanese Industry Minister Pierre Gemayel on Tuesday and branded this as an "act of terrorism."

    "We were shocked by this assassination. We view it as an act of terrorism," U.S. Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns said.
