BEIJING, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- Nearly 80 percent of
rural Chinese women voted in elections for village officials and almost half
were willing to run for a village post, a survey by the All-China Women's
Federation shows.
Economic independence helped boost rural women's
enthusiasm for managing village affairs as 46.9 percent were eager to run for a
village committee post.
The survey polled 10,000 rural women in 10 provinces
on their living conditions, their roles in rural life and understanding and
aspirations for a new socialist countryside.
More than 70 percent worked on farmlands and
contributed half of their family income. More than 80 percent were confident
about the future and 60 percent said they were living a happy life. Women hold
15 percent of village committee positions.
