Special Report: Hu Jintao visits 4 Asian nations, attends APEC Meeting

BEIJING, Nov. 20 -- During the meeting in Hanoi, President Hu Jintao called for closer ties between Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation members in energy, security, environmental protection and health. He also urged efforts to seek a peaceful solution to the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula.

President Hu made the call for increased cooperation in an address during the second stage of the two-day 14th APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting, which began in Hanoi on Saturday.

Hu said the APEC members must work together to ensure energy security in the region. He said APEC members should strengthen cooperation in energy exploration and utilization, as well as set up a system for the research, development and popularization of energy technology.

Hu also urged the use of more environment-friendly energy.

Meanwhile, he expressed China is willing to make joint efforts with other APEC members to safeguard people's health in the region.

As for the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula, the Chinese president said it is China's persistent stance to stick to the de-nuclearization of the peninsula and seek a peaceful solution to the issue through dialogue and negotiation.

President Hu said China expects all concerned parties to take concrete measures to resume the talks as soon as possible and implement a joint statement adopted in September 2005 for the de-nuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
