Beijing, Nov. 3 (Xinhuanet) -- Sony Corp. plans to
market the world's lightest notebook computer next month in Japan, according to
news reports Friday.
The company, in a bid to boost its presence among
business users in the country, has no plan at the moment to offer the computer
overseas, the company announced.
"Type G" Vaio computer, weighing 898 grams, will be
the world's lightest laptop PC with a 12.1-inch liquid crystal display (LCD)
screen, the company said at a news conference in Tokyo recently.
Also at the conference, Sony Senior Vice President
Yoshihisa Ishida said the recent recalls of Sony-made batteries are expected to
"have little impact on its personal computer operations."World top PC producers
such as Dell Inc., Apple Computer Inc. are recalling as many as 9.6 million Sony
batteries which could occasionally overheat and catch fire.
Sony said a basic model of the "type G" Vaio, which
runs for about 12.5 hours on a battery and is not equipped with an optical
drive, will be priced at some 1,881 U.S. dollars.
The company did not disclose its sales target for the
new models, but said it aims to raise the ratio of its PC revenue from corporate
clients from the current level of less than 10 percent to 30 percent in Japan by
the business year ending March 2010.
