BRUSSELS, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana on Monday congratulated Serbia for the orderly referendum on a new constitution.
The EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy said in a statement that the adoption of a new constitution by Serbia was an important step in moving forward the internal reform agenda.
Serbia held a two-day referendum on a new constitution over the weekend. Preliminary results show that most Serbians voted for the constitution, which says Kosovo is an integral part of Serbian territory.
Regarding the provisions relating to Kosovo, Solana recalled that Kosovo was currently under international administration according to resolution 1244 of the UN Security Council and that its future status would be determined by the ongoing status negotiation backed by the UN.
Although technically still part of Serbia, Kosovo has been run by the UN and NATO since a NATO bombing campaign in 1999. Future status talks sponsored by the UN were launched at the end of 2005, but the they haven't produced any concrete result.
