BERLIN, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said here Wednesday that the military bloc should adapt itself to new challenges brought about by globalization.

In a speech marking the 50th anniversary of the German Atlantic Association, de Hoop Scheffer said that it was necessary to reevaluate the trans-Atlantic security concept as international terrorism has posed threat without a face.

De Hoop Scheffer, who met German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Defense Minister Franz Josef Jung, called for a strategy to prevent the spread of weapons of mass destruction.

He said that the military alliance had no desire to play the role of world policeman but was "the right tool" and a global partner for a new international security partnership.

He noted that augmenting NATO and its role in Afghanistan would be the main themes of the NATO summit in the Latvian capital Riga on November 28-29.

Afghanistan was the bloc's most important mission and the entire international community should remain engaged in the country, he said. Enditem
