BAGHDAD, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- Two U.S. marines were killed Monday during combat action in Iraq's volatile Anbar province, the U.S. military said on Tuesday.
"Two Marines assigned to Regimental Combat Team 5 died Monday from injuries sustained due to enemy action while operating in AlAnbar Province," the military said in a statement. The statement, however, provide no further details about the incident.
The latest deaths were part of a surge in U.S. fatalities in October, bringing the U.S. soldiers killed to 89, the highest toll for any month this year.
About 2,795 U.S. soldiers have been killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003, according to media counts.
